Renovation of the Garstang Hub

In 2019, Bolton NEWT assumed management of a neglected Bolton At Home plot, overrun with fly-tipping and brambles. Through dedicated effort, we revitalized the site by 2025, using borrowed materials, donated funds, and ingenuity—repurposing old fencing and converting discarded bins into water butts. The result is a resourceful community allotment reminiscent of a miniature, thriving village.

Now, we seek grant funding to elevate the Garstang Hub into a year-round, welcoming space. Moving beyond volunteers huddling in a shack against the rain, we aim to create a modern, vibrant allotment. Partnering with local groups, we’ll maximize its use, benefiting the wider Breightmet community.

This year’s work began by removing broken, irreparable planters. We divided three rhubarb plants into 12 new pots, placed at the site entrance. This enhances ground cover to suppress weeds and leverages a neighbor’s hosepipe for watering, as rhubarb thrives with ample moisture.

We’ve removed additional rhubarb, relocated strawberries to new beds, and transplanted two plum trees, optimizing underused spaces at the Garstang Hub for future growth. In the coming weeks, we’ll apply for grants to fund a custom-built cabin and host Christmas and Halloween events. Join us Saturdays at 11 a.m. to get involved!

Superb work so far. Looking forward to being able to use this site all year round and having our community involved 12 months of the year!
